Our target for 2025

We commit to reusing materials, increasing recyclability, and reducing waste. We put a particular focus on the responsible use of the resource water. The circular opportunity combines our passion for circularity with our innovation capabilities.

We keep materials in use by ensuring longevity of products through their design.
We increasingly use recycled materials, especially plastic, while having the same performance and quality as comparable products without recycled materials.
We try to reduce waste and increase the recycling ratio in our packaging.
As water is one of the most endangered resources, we will continue designing specific products to use water efficiently when irrigating and using water in our own operations in a smart way.

Until 2025 we will provide 50 circular innovations.

Circular innovations: approaches that reduce the need to extract materials and close loops in our economy, keeping products and materials in use.

1. REDUCE: The need to extract ressources

We reduce waste and the usage of water through innovative products and in our own operations. Durable and reliable, the products are perfectly suitable for many years of use under the demanding conditions of everyday gardening. Longevity of products is key. We are convinced of the quality of our products that we offer warranty periods of up to 35 years.

2. REUSE: Keep products/materials in use

Many of our products offer extraordinarily long warranties, but should they ever break, we want to make repairs as easy and cost-effective as possible – to further extend the lifetime of the products. Thus, should a beloved GARDENA product happen to break, there is the opportunity to repair it yourself with replacement parts in a lot of cases. For more complex products there is our service center for repairing.

3. RECYCLE: Closing loops in our economy

Through dedicated resources and research we drive projects to improve both existing and future processes. From raw materials to internal logistics, manufacturing and product packaging, our progress to reduce demand for resources by shifting to recycled materials allows us to save virgin, fossil-based plastic.

WATER - How we contribute to use our precious ressource efficiently through innovation

Water is one of the foundations of sustainable, green spaces. But water is also a scarce resource that must be used responsibly. Many regions of the earth are already suffering from severe water shortages today, and the situation looks set to get much worse in the coming years. This makes it all the more important to use water wisely – because every drop counts. We focus on enabling our customers to adopt efficient irrigation solutions, while also reducing water consumption in our own operations.

MATERIALS - How we contribute to an optimal product life cycle

To produce high-performing and durable gardening tools, a wide variety of materials is needed - such as plastics, wood or steel. We strive to reduce their use as much as possible, both in our products and packaging, and to work with recycled and recyclable materials wherever possible. It also goes without saying that reducing and recycling material waste in our own factories and warehouses is a must for us.

Optimising irrigation with smart technology

The smart sensor regularly measures the soil moisture to optimise the watering schedule. Within the GARDENA smart app watering times are adapted to the changing times of sunrise and sunset and the local weather forecast can be taken into account as well.

Reducing and reusing water in our production

We have established closed-loop water cooling systems for our production tools and machinery in several of our plants, so that no water is wasted during the cooling processes. Our plant in Heuchlingen was the first one to introduce such a measure, already back in 1968!

How we contribute to an optimal product life cycle

We're exploring alternative materials and how they can be used in our products to develop our material mix further. Taking into account the properties and functions that the different products have to fulfil, our experts are working out the possibilities and limits of the material composition down to the last detail. Special emphasis has been placed on uncompromising quality in terms of functionality and durability for long-lasting products used outdoor.

Recycling: EcoLine

The EcoLine is the first range of high-quality gardening tools in the market that is made with significant shares of recycled materials.

Ressource-efficient solution across brands: Power for All Battery System

One battery to be used for more than 100 different applications in home and garden from various brands. Incompatible batteries and chargers are a thing of the past. That cuts costs and saves space.

Reduced material use: combisystem

GARDENA combisystem allows for flexible combinations with just one handle due to interchangeable attachments for any gardening task.

Did you know there is post-consumer and post-industrial recycled plastic?

Post-consumer recycled plastic is made up of household waste, such as films or packaging.

The plastic components of our EcoLine consist of at least 45% post-consumer recycled material.

Post-industrial recycled plastic is made from plastic waste that is generated during industrial processing

... for example during the manufacturing of plastic packaging or other plastic products. These production residues cannot re-enter the same process and are, therefore, used for a different manufacturing process.

Circularity as our principle in production: turning hazardous waste into reusable material

In our metal-processing plant in Niederstotzingen, we have put in place a briquetting system. It is based on a sedimentation filtering process, which removes metal chips and other residues from our cooling lubricants, while turning grinding sludge into a reusable raw material. This system also allows us to save about 100.000 kWh of electricity per year.

Carbon reduction in our operations and beyond, providing our fair share in limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C in accordance with the Paris Agreement – the global framework for climate policy.
